Fall Session

From the beginning of school until fall break in November, Roots & Wings will be hosted in the cool cedar groves of Idler’s Rest Nature Preserve on Moscow Mountain. Thanks to a collaboration with the Palouse Land Trust, children and teachers will have the opportunity to bask in the wonder of the forest as summer fades into autumn. During this session, we will be learning about friends, how to play together, and adjusting to the daily rhythms of school. We will learn about all the critters and plants of the forest, as well as the seven Leave No Trace princples, learning how to keep our forests and wild spaces healthy.

Winter Session &
Home Base

From late November until spring, Roots & Wings will be hosted at Deep Roots Farm in Moscow, Idaho. The school site is nestled between rows of blueberry bushes and a large willow grove, right above Paradise Creek neighboring the Berman Creekside Park. We will utilize the city cul-de-sac and park space for drop off, morning circle time, and pick up at the end of the day. Our fall preparation plans are to build a heated hoop house for shelter in inclement weather and place a small camper onsite to serve as bathroom and changing facilities. We will install a fence with gates to delineate the school site and make traveling easier.

At Deep Roots Farm, we will learn about the adaptability and resilience of plants and animals during winter. We will learn about body awareness and how to use our outdoor gear so we can have fun and be safe in the mud, ice, and snow. We will learn bushcraft skills like safe fire and shelter building to feel comfortable in harsh weather. We will also learn about the solstice, how daylight and seasons change, and the different seasons and holidays of the world.
